We love foods that use local produce. Brownwood Farms has long taken pride in using regional produce in their sauces, mustards and preserves, and this cherry barbecue sauce is no exception. In this complex sauce, the underlying ingredient is Michigan cherries. The tart and sweet fruit is added with tomatoes to an apple cider and balsamic vinegar base, then sweetened with brown sugar and molasses and spiked with a variety of spices such as smoky ancho pepper powder and warming allspice. It’s also notably double-barreled, which means it’s been aged in bourbon barrels, not once but twice, making for a sauce with a hearty depth. Sticky, tangy, surprising and oh-so-delicious. Goes to show that cherries are far more versatile than a simple pie filling.
Tip of the Tongue:
We’d like an order of French fries to go, stat! The perfect delivery device to shovel this sauce directly into our Mouths. But the sweet tang would be ideal for ribs… oh, or even a sweet barbecue duck.
